A striking new Countryside Properties development that will form the first part of the Cambridge Southern Fringe has been given the go-ahead by Cambridge City Council. Detailed planning consent has been granted for Glebe Farm which will feature 286 new mixed-tenure homes in a prominent location at the southern gateway to Cambridge.
The developer, who was behind the RIBA Stirling Prize winning Accordia scheme in Cambridge, has spent two years working with Cambridge City Council on the planning application which involved a series of public consultations. Access will be from the new Addenbrooke’s access road close to its junction with the A1309 Hauxton Road and the Trumpington Park and Ride.
Chris Crook, Subsidiary Managing Director, Countryside Properties, comments: “The unanimous vote in favour of this development will allow us to help ease the current acute housing shortage in Cambridge. Glebe Farm has been designed to meet this need for high quality, sustainable new homes that will integrate with the locality. We will be investing heavily in local transport, education and community infrastructure and we’re pleased it is the first scheme in the Southern Fringe to come forward for delivery.”
Peter Studdert, Director of Joint Planning for Cambridge’s Growth Areas, said: “This is a major step forward in providing much-needed new homes for Cambridge. An enormous amount of work has gone in to the scheme design.”
The architecture of the new homes responds appropriately to its gateway location whilst offering predominantly family houses. Homes will range from one to four bedrooms, with a significant percentage of affordable properties. A key part of the site will feature 2 storey family homes. The new homes have been designed to achieve ‘Lifetime Homes’ standards and will be highly sustainable as they will meet levels 3 and 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes.
Glebe Farm has been designed to respect the existing character of the site and to successfully integrate with surrounding communities. There will be extensive open space and new landscaping that will promote an enhanced, interconnected environment. There will be new allotments and a contribution will also be made to public art. Glebe Farm will benefit from the Cambridge Guided Bus, the Addenbrooke’s Access Road and the extensive community facilities that will be available at Clay Farm and other nearby Southern Fringe schemes.
Subject to finalising specific planning conditions, work is scheduled to start towards the end of 2010 with the first new homes being completed in 2011.
