Now Countryside Residential has painstakingly recreated the fashionable Priory Parade mansion which originally stood on the site and named it Wellington Place. And the commemoration plaque has been returned and unveiled by Mrs Valerie Gore, Chairwoman of the Josephine Butler Society.

The ceremony was watched by Josephine Butler's great niece Ms Beverley Grey and also attended by the Mayor of Cheltenham Councillor David Banyard, Civic Society Chairman Mr Robert Wilson, the Rev Dr Richard Cleaves, Minister of the nearby Highbury Congregational Church and Mrs Anna Briggs.

A play about Jospehine Butler's life, written and performed by Mrs Briggs, was staged in the Congregational Church the previous evening. Countryside Residential Regional Managing Director Gary Freeman said the new Wellington Place apartments were modelled on the original Priory which was also visited by the Duke of Wellington.

"We have combined the elegance and grandeur of the Regency period with sophisticated modern living to create a new landmark building for Cheltenham and we are delighted to welcome the safe return of the Josephine Butler plaque," he said.

"There has been tremendous interest in our 32 superb Wellington Place apartments with the result that only nine remain for sale including four magnificent penthouses which have yet to be released." said Mr Freeman.
