Countryside Maritime walked away with the award for 'Best Use of a Brownfield Site for Housing' which went to their stunning new 350-acre waterside development at St Mary's Island, Chatham Maritime, Kent. In the same category, Countryside Residential received a citation for Sidley Grange, Ightham, Kent.

Chatham Maritime is a joint venture with South East England Development Agency to redevelop the historic Royal Naval Dockyards. Chatham Maritime is well on its way to becoming what the judges referred to as a "well-planned community" of offices, shops, leisure facilities, schools, transport, health facilities and approximately 1600 new homes for more than 4,000 people. To encourage more healthy uses of transport, there will also be a network of footpaths and cycleways and areas of landscaped open space. Plans are underway for a 600 berth Marina with a chandlery, café and other facilities.

Chief Executive of Countryside Properties Plc, Graham Cherry, commented, "Winning this award for the regeneration of St Mary's Island is absolutely thrilling to SEEDA and ourselves so soon after recognition for the development from central Government. At Countryside, we are committed to creating sustainable new communities such as St. Mary's Island, and the response from the residents of this unique island development is proof that new communities can be successfully created on difficult brownfield locations."

Prices for apartments and houses currently available at Chatham Maritime range from £85,000 to £167,950. For sales enquiries telephone: 01634 890 900.

A commendation for 'The Best New Housing Project' went to Copthorn Homes, part of the Countryside Group, for the Chronos Building in Mile End Road, London E1. Noted by the judges as "very much a building of its time - the 21st Century", this ground-breaking new development will be a flagship for Copthorn Homes who are becoming renowned for their affordable 'designer' homes. The Chronos Building exemplifies Copthorn's unique design style and innovation, with extensive use of chrome and glass to maximise space and light.

The Chronos Building will consist of three blocks; two will be set around an attractive central courtyard and the third will front the Mile End Road with shops on the ground floor and an impressive rotunda which will become a new landmark for E1. The development will comprise 65 one to three bedroom apartments, maisonettes and penthouses, with prices from £169,000. Sales are scheduled for launch in May. For sales enquiries, telephone: 01277 262 422.

Copthorn also won a citation in the 'Best House in England' category for the 'Edmonton' house design at Church Langley, Harlow.

Guy Lambert, Corporate Communications Manager, Commented, "The judges of the National HomeBuilder Design Awards are looking for outstanding examples of contemporary design. To win four awards is exciting as we always strive to achieve high standards of design at every one of our developments." He added, "With the Government calling for more sustainable development and higher density housing, design is becoming increasingly important."
