Countryside Properties' strong track record in award-winning sustainable housing will ensure that the new scheme enhances the site's role within the Cliveden Estate

Robin Mills, The National Trust's Regional Director

Countryside Properties PLC, the developer of sustainable mixed-use and mixed-tenure projects, is pleased to announce that it has been selected by the National Trust as its preferred developer, for the creation of a new 'greener' sustainable housing development on the site of the former Canadian Red Cross Hospital at Cliveden, near Maidenhead in Buckinghamshire. The proposed scheme was chosen for its creative vision and environmental sensitivity following a detailed selection process.

The project will, subject to planning permission, comprise a mixed-tenure development of 198 contemporary houses and apartments, to be built in line with the National Trust's environmental principles. Countryside Properties expect to commence works in early 2003 with an anticipated completion date of Autumn 2005.

The area to be developed is currently a run down 'brownfield' site of 5.7 ha (14 acres), which the National Trust is keen to regenerate, making it once again a thriving part of the local community and the Cliveden Estate. The proposed new homes will help meet local housing needs, with at least 20% being homes for key workers. The development of the site will also provide an income that is vital to the National Trust if it is to continue to care for Cliveden in the future.

'We believe that this scheme is an opportunity to create a national benchmark for sustainable development in an historic and cultural environment', explained Richard Cherry, New Business Director of Countryside Properties. 'We were chosen as our proposals best met the principles of sustainable development through satisfying the strict environmental, aesthetic, social and economic criteria laid out for the development by the National Trust.'

The National Trust's Regional Director, Robin Mills, said: 'Countryside Properties' strong track record in award-winning sustainable housing will ensure that the new scheme enhances the site's role within the Cliveden Estate and the surrounding area. We were impressed by the sensitivity and creative vision with which they approached the site, and the way they have met the rigorous environmental standards set for its development.'
