The Old Brewery Quarter, Cardiff , a development by Countryside Properties PLC in a joint venture with S A Brain & Co. and Mansford Holdings Plc, has won a national award for successful regeneration.
The scheme, which has seen the transformation of the former Brains Brewery and Caroline Street , has won the ‘Best Leisure Regeneration Project’ in the 2005 Retail & Leisure Property Awards. The Old Brewery Quarter was also shortlisted as one of three finalists in the 'Best Commercial Mixed-Use Leisure Scheme' category.
The awards, organised by Property Week in association with Accessible Retail, the Shop Agents Society and the Leisure Property Forum, celebrate the best in new leisure and retail development.
Following the Brewery’s closure in 1999, the proposal to regenerate the area was given the green light from Cardiff City Council in 2000 and the developers created 44 loft style apartments, leisure, restaurant, retail and office accommodation.
The regeneration included the retention of a number listed buildings. Historic features including the original brewery vaults have been combined with modern design to create a striking new leisure and housing destination in the Capital.
A success from the outset, with 70% of the retail accommodation let before completion, the scheme has also attracted an impressive list of tenants including Hard Rock Café, La Tasca, Starbucks, Chiquitos amongst other well known brands, whilst S A Brain & Co still retains its heritage within the Quarter with its ‘Yard Bar and Kitchen’ concept.
Mark Chatham, Director for Countryside Properties, commented: “The Old Brewery Quarter is an excellent example of mixed-use development in a sensitive town centre location so we’re delighted to receive this recognition from industry peers. The scheme is highly successful and trading very well.”
Philip Lay from S A Brain & Co Ltd added: "The Old Brewery Quarter is going from strength to strength as one of Wales ' leading leisure destinations. It's become a catalyst for the regeneration of a significant area of Cardiff centred around our Yard Bar & Kitchen, a development that has brought together our brewing heritage on the site which dates back to 1882 and innovative elements of contemporary bar and restaurant design."
E J Hales and Stephenson & Alexander were retained letting agents on the scheme.
