Back to News

15 January 2008

Countryside Properties has been selected as the preferred developer for a £100m mixed-use development on Horsted Way in Chatham, Medway. Comprising a proposed 411 residential units and 33,500 sq ft of commercial space, the development will create a sustainable environment across 20 acres.

The residential element of the scheme will consist of 301 one and two bedroom apartments and 110 two to four bedroom homes.  Twenty-five per cent of the homes are designated as affordable housing.  Situated 2 miles south of both Chatham and Rochester town centres and within easy reach of the M2 and Chatham railway station, the accessibility of the development is expected to appeal to first-time buyers as well as to families and older purchasers.

The commercial element of the scheme is proposed to include 26,000 sq ft of business space and 2,000 sq ft of retail space, as well as 5,400 sq ft of nursery/community uses.

Tony Travers, Subsidiary Managing Director of Countryside Properties, commented:
"Countryside Properties and our partners SEEDA were the first to invest in the regeneration of the Medway Towns at Chatham Maritime which has spearheaded the renaissance of the area.  Horsted represents a further strategic investment in the future of the Medway Towns and the wider Thames Gateway where we are a key developer.

"The combination of excellent local transport links, community facilities and amenities, with a range of housing tenures and workspace options that lie within close proximity of green open spaces, will make this a popular living and working option for a wide range of people and businesses."

The development will be located on the site of the existing Mid Kent College, which will be relocating to a new facility, currently under construction, in Gillingham. Vacant possession and completion of the new College is expected in late 2009 and, subject to Section 106 approval, a start on site at Horsted is expected in early 2010.
