Three and four bedroom detached properties continue to be the most common type of property on the market, according to a recent report by the Halifax. Many purchasers aspire towards living in a detached house as they move up the property ladder as it is seen as the type of home that offers the most space and the most prestige. Chris and Sally Rumble, together with their son Jack, however, have recently sold their three bedroom detached home and moved into a three bedroom end of terrace house at Countryside Maritime’s ‘Ventura’ development on St Mary’s Island at Chatham Maritime in Kent.
“I suppose that a lot of people might consider our decision to move out of our detached house and into a terraced property as a step back down the property ladder,” Chris comments. “When we moved into our home two years ago we never imagined that we would ever live in anything but a detached house again, as it offers so much space and is the type of property that you work your way up the ladder to buy. We were totally surprised when we visited the Ventura sales office and discovered that the terraced houses that Countryside is building are more spacious than the home we lived in.
“The additional space that these homes offer has been achieved through the internal layout and clever use of glazing. The living areas are spread over two floors with a fantastic open-plan kitchen and dining area, which is excellent for entertaining. While the glass makes the actual design of the house really interesting and distinctive, it is also extremely functional as it lets in huge amounts of natural light.
“Even though we weren’t looking to move house, we have definitely made the right decision. Our new spacious terraced house certainly proves that the detached home no longer gives you the guaranteed extra space you always thought it did!”

Ventura comprises highly contemporary two, three, four and five bedroom houses. The unique properties are being created in an unusual architectural style in a variety of subtle renders, including yellow, purple, green and blue pastel shades, while many of the new homes feature butterfly-shaped rooflines.
The striking architecture creates even more impressive interior features, with some of the master bedrooms created in vaulted roof spaces. In addition to the stunning glazing features that enhance the light and space of the properties, materials such as steel and cedarwood, as well as the bold use of colour, further contribute to this development’s unique environment.
On completion, the 150-acre island will incorporate local amenities that include a new school, a doctor’s surgery and a village hall (opening in 2004), in addition to public open spaces and a riverside walk. Approximately 20% of St Mary’s Island is dedicated to open space, including a large belt of parkland with maturing woodland, which will be conserved for wildlife and leisure pursuits.
Countryside Maritime, a joint venture partnership between Countryside Properties and the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA), is also creating two further developments on this popular island. Two and three bedroom waterside apartments and duplexes are available at ‘The Fishing Village’, while the two, three, four and five bedroom homes at ‘Northshore’ benefit from traditional, white and cedar boarding. The next hamlet of homes will be released for sale in spring 2004.
The houses at Ventura have been designed to offer residents good communication links to encourage them to leave the car at home. There is a comprehensive network of footpaths and cycleways throughout the island. The nearby train station provides a regular train service to London Victoria (journey time approximately 45 minutes), and also links to the Channel Tunnel International Station.
New homes at Ventura are currently available to purchase off-plan with prices starting from £249,000 for a three bedroom townhouse. For sales enquiries call Countryside Maritime’s sales centre: 0845 071 2070 or email: stmarysisland@cpplc.com Alternatively, visit www.ventura-chatham.co.uk
