The late Alan Cherry CBE DL 24 November 2010

Medway Council has honoured our former Chairman and founder the late Alan Cherry CBE DL with a posthumous ‘Special Recognition’ award at its second Culture and Design Awards ceremony.

The Medway Culture and Design Awards are organised by Medway Council to celebrate the area’s thriving cultural sector and also recognise the importance of quality and diversity in building and landscape design.

Alan Cherry was the former Chair of the Local Economic Board and played a major role in the regeneration of St Mary’s Island.  He sadly passed away earlier this year following a battle with cancer.

Audience members joined Medway Council Leader, Cllr. Rodney Chambers in remembering Alan.

Cllr Chambers said: "I got to know and respect Alan as a friend, and he was certainly a great friend and champion of Medway.  He brought his design expertise to St Mary's Island, and for him quality was paramount. What you see today at St Mary's Island is a testament to that."

Medway Council chief executive Neil Davies: "Alan was an outstanding individual who had enormous energy, conviction and values.  Obviously he was commercially successful, but he balanced this with a strong commitment to the public sector, and extensive charitable giving and support.

"All of his developments were at the vanguard of great architecture and design - St Mary's Island being the example here at Medway.  He had a great work ethos, much of which he demonstrated as a champion for Medway and as chairman of our economic partnership.

"We are extremely grateful for his commitment and support to Medway; already, he has been greatly missed."
