Countryside Properties' £250 million City Park Gate has received outline planning permission from Birmingham City Council. The scheme is a major 4.68 acre mixed-use urban quarter designed by MAKE Architects, led by Ken Shuttleworth, a former partner to Sir Norman Foster. The development is in close proximity to the Selfridges building and the new Bull Ring.
City Park Gate will form the gateway to Eastside, the 10 year, £6bn project to create a new cultural and learning quarter for Birmingham, which is fast developing as the next step in the regeneration of the city centre.
City Park Gate will comprise up to 844 apartments, of which 25% will be affordable homes, 300,000 sq ft of office space, a 151,000 sq ft hotel and up to 99,000 sq ft of retail space including up to 52,000 sq ft of food store.
The development will also include the refurbishments of the Grade II Listed Fox and Grapes public house, and the locally listed Island House as well as the provision of a high quality public realm.
John Grealis, Regional Director of Major Projects at Countryside Properties, says: "We are delighted to have received planning permission for this major regeneration project. We truly believe that this will be a real asset to Birmingham, a distinctive and sensitive extension to the city and a major catalyst for further regeneration."
The projects around Eastside are expected to create a dramatic a transformation for the wider Birmingham.
Work is expected to start on-site in early 2008.
