An innovative new approach to local labour developed through Quadrant Community Investment (QCI), the community regeneration arm of London & Quadrant Housing Trust (L&Q) and delivered by Countryside Properties', In Partnership Division and the Finsbury Park Community Trust has recently placed no fewer than 10 trainees on the Denmark Road development in Haringey.

The Haringey Local Labour in Construction programme is run by Finsbury Park Community Trust and supported by the SRB project 'Haringey Heartlands' and QCI.

Julia Coate, Project Employ Manager, Urban Futures, said "I'm delighted that this project links local people to the emerging construction job opportunities in the area". Urban Futures has committed £95,000 to the programme over two years.

The Haringey Local Labour and Training Scheme seeks to develop the first local labour in construction scheme in Haringey. Its aim is to target the Haringey Heartlands residents who are unemployed and provide them with the necessary access to construction training linked to a recognized qualification and employment opportunities.

QCI`s Nadeem Malik said L&Q`s construction partner Countryside had fully supported the programme and provided a wide range of opportunities for the trainees. "We always try and work with our contractors to give something back to the communities where we work, and Countryside is an excellent partner in this important project."

Paul Sweeney, Community Development Manager at Countryside Properties' In Partnership Division, added, "The Haringey Local Labour Scheme is an excellent initiative in giving local people an opportunity to work. We are delighted to be working with our partners London and Quadrant in providing training opportunities within the construction industry".

The Denmark Road development, which is being built in association with London and Qudrant and Countryside Properties' In Partnership Division, will be completed in March 2003 and will include 31 new homes and 19 refurbished flats.
