Group supports Children's Hospices

20 March 2008

Two years ago, funding from The National Lottery came to an end for Children's Hospice Services in East Anglia, so as part of a continued fundraising effort to raise the vast majority of its income from public donations, they have this week launching a Lottery, sponsored by Countryside Properties, to help support their much needed work with life-threatened children and their families.

In March 2006 amidst considerable public outcry, funding from the National Lottery to the tune of £600,000 a year came to an end for the charity. This resulted in East Anglia's Children's Hospices (EACH) making key changes to the way it delivered its care while still trying to meet the needs of those families requiring their support. With public support ongoing EACH continues to deliver a range of care and support services both in the family home and at one of three hospice sites, which includes the Children's Hospice in Cambridge.

This year it is anticipated that it will cost around £4.9 million to run all 3 EACH Hospice Services at Milton (Cambridge), Quidenham (Norfolk) and Ipswich (Suffolk) - approximately £3.9 million of this is required from voluntary donations, meaning fundraising schemes like the Local Hospice Lottery are vital for their work to continue.

EACH will receive a profit of around 8 times more than the 5p given to charities by the National Lottery and they hope players of the national game will either switch allegiance to the Local Hospice Lottery or play it alongside. Despite the top prize being less, the weekly first prize of £1500 gives players 10 times better odds than winning a prize of similar value in the National Lottery - and of course, it's a win-win situation as EACH benefit too.

To help maximise the profits from the Local Hospice Lottery, developers Countryside Properties have given their backing to the new scheme.

Alan Cherry CBE DL, Chairman of Countryside Properties said, "This new lottery will play a very important part in EACH's fundraising and the continuation of high quality children's hospice services for locally based families.  As developers with a long-term commitment to the Cambridge region we want to strongly support EACH and sponsoring the lottery was the ideal opportunity to do that.  I would urge everyone who can to support East Anglia's Children's Hospices through the Local Hospice Lottery  - it's a great way to do so, there's a good chance of winning and it's only £1 a week!"

Graham Butland, EACH Chief Executive says, "Joining the Local Hospice Lottery couldn't be easier. Leaflets with application forms are being delivered throughout the Cambridge area or you can request one by calling 0845 1220772 or online at  www.localhospicelottery.org. You can pay by standing order, cheque or credit/debit card and once your form is returned we will send you your unique game number. Please help us to carry on our vital work with local families."

Countryside Properties is also sponsoring Farleigh Hospice's rebranded lottery.  The Lottery provides vital funding for the charity's caring services in Essex which last year provided support to over 2,600 people.  If you would like more information or would like to join the Local Hospice Lottery, more information can be found on: www.localhospicelottery.org or you can phone 0845 122 0772.
