Countryside Properties has acquired the former Harold Wood Hospital, a 31 acre site on Gubbins Lane in Romford, Essex, from the Barking Havering and Redbridge Hospitals NHS Trust.
The leading developer proposes to create a new community including around 780 new homes consisting of 65% private for sale and 35% affordable. There will be a mix of apartments, as well as two, three, four and five bedroom family homes.
The homes will be set in amongst mature trees, and the original grade two listed lodge building that already stands on the site, which will be the development's focal point.
The development will be highly energy efficient and has been designed to feature 10% renewables, meaning that 10% of all the energy needed by the homes will come from a renewable energy source.
Alan Cherry, Chairman of Countryside Properties, says: "We are delighted to have secured this substantial site in such a good location. We will ensure that the development offers an excellent balance between open space and a sustainable built environment with a wide range of homes that will create a balanced, mixed community. We look forward to beginning work, subject to planning permission."
Located in the London Borough of Havering, two and a half miles east of Romford and just off the A12, the site benefits from good communication links including the nearby Harold Wood train station with direct links to London Liverpool Street, and is close to a wide range of local amenities.
The planning application is expected to be submitted in July 2007 and Countryside Properties hopes to start work on site in August 2008.
