Residents on a South East London estate were invited to a reception to launch work on their new homes last week. Executive Member for Housing at Southwark Council, Cllr Beverley Bassom, visited the Coopers Road Estate in Southwark last week to see the demolition work in progress on the first phase of the regeneration.

The £17million estate regeneration scheme by Southwark Council and housing association Peabody Trust, which is part of the Southwark Estates Initiative, involves the phased replacement of four 1960's blocks over the next five years with 156 new flats and houses.

The new homes, which have been designed with the extensive involvement of residents, will be environmentally friendly; with high levels of energy efficiency, reduced water consumption and the use of renewable and recycled building materials.

Paying tribute to the residents Cllr Bassom said "The demolition of Palamon Court will make way for the first phase of homes to be re-built on this estate as part of the council`s programme to regenerate homes in the Borough. The residents have been wonderfully supportive and have worked hard for a number of years to get to where they are - which is to see the start of their new homes being built. The launch marks the next stage of homes to built as part of our partnership with Peabody and Countryside, our construction partners."
