As part of its drive to promote responsible, sustainable development throughout the UK, Countryside Properties PLC has created a new position for an Environmental Manager. The post will involve the development and implementation of an Environmental Management System and monitoring and updating, where necessary, the Environmental Policy for the Group.

Andrew Day has been taken on to fill the post. He will work alongside Trisha Gupta MBE, the Group Chief Architect, in Countryside's Planning & Design department, and will also report to the Group's Environment Committee.

"The creation of this new post will ensure continuity of our green policies and our wish to be acknowledged as an industry leader in our approach to care of the environment," said Trisha Gupta. She continues, "Andrew's broad experience of the industry and his enthusiasm and understanding of environmental and sustainable issues will stand him in good stead to make a marked contribution to the business and in turn, to the environment we are creating for the future."

Andrew will be moving into a very broad role. His responsibilities will involve reporting to colleagues on new environmentally friendly products and concepts and on new and innovative processes for sustainable and efficient construction. He plans to introduce a new updated, ethical policy into specification/tender documentation throughout the Group and to research and report on new prefabrication/standardised systems in line with the Latham and Egan Report.

Andrew will be monitoring, commenting and communicating across the Group, on environmental issues and legislation changes, as well as on associated industry standards. He will ensure a consistent approach is maintained towards sustainable design procurement and completion of projects, in accordance with the Environmental Policy.

Andrew will also represent the Group in all environmental matters relating to research bodies, industry partners and external parties. This will involve liaising with and advising external designers, engineers, technical managers and Health and Safety officers on environmental issues and queries, and responding to questionnaires/fact finders from the City, environmental groups, academics and local authorities.

On the daily running of the company's business, Andrew will monitor Countryside's own waste and recycling pilot schemes and implement new and greener procedures across the Group. This includes office waste, recycling and other initiatives at head office and implementing them across the Group.

Andrew, 33, has come from AMEC Design, where he was a senior architect looking after Pfizer Pharmaceuticals and working on the European Gateway Building in Kent. Prior to that, Andrew has worked on an array of high profile refurbishments, conversions and new building.
