Any fears of a slow down in the property market proved unfounded at the weekend when thirty-six homes were reserved at Abbey Mills, the exciting regeneration of Merton Abbey Mills by Copthorn Homes on the banks of the River Wandle between Colliers Wood and Wimbledon in south west London.

Over 400 visitors responded to the invitation to attend the two day launch with queues beginning at 7.00 am on Saturday morning. The new marketing suite was crowded with people admiring the two-bedroom show apartment as well as taking advantage of the opportunity to glimpse the future with an internal and external flythrough of the development on a giant plasma screen. Two scale models of Abbey Mills left visitors in no doubt as to the extent of the new plans for the area which will include a Virgin Active Health and Fitness Centre, restaurants and hotel which will make Abbey Mills a captivating and convenient location for its new residents. The first twenty people reserving their homes were also rewarded with free membership for two people to the new Virgin Active Centre.

At Abbey Mills, history and 21st century living will successfully fuse together. Steeped in heritage, Abbey Mills is set to become a vibrant new quarter in an area which historically played a major role in the Arts and Crafts movement with William Morris and Arthur Liberty both running workshops from the site in the 19th century. Every summer, Abbeyfest, a two month long festival of music, theatre and comedy takes place in the piazza while all year round there is the famous Merton Abbey Mills weekend market with its grade II listed buildings and famous watermill, offering a diverse range of antique and book shops as well as crafts, clothes, jewellery and Farmer’s Market.

288, one, two and three bedroom contemporary apartments, set within eight different architecturally designed apartment blocks, some with secure underground parking, offer spacious, light, flexible open plan living. The Copthorn Homes trademark – its imaginative use of glazing, maximizes natural light while wood floors, stainless steel kitchen appliances, anthracite worktops, contemporary bathrooms and spacious bedrooms complete the specification. Many of the apartments will have balconies with views over landscaped gardens or the nearby River Wandle.

Commenting on the development’s success, Ian Hepworth, sales director for Copthorn Homes said, “We knew Abbey Mills offered something new and exciting and we are delighted that our expectations have proved well founded. For the launch weekend we only invited people who had registered their interest since we first arrived on site, and with the advertising and marketing campaign about to make an impact, we are expecting the success to continue.”

Mindful of the area’s heritage, Copthorn Homes are taking care to ensure that the development both integrates with and enhances the surrounding environment and that a sense of community and place are created. New walkways and cycle paths will be enjoyed with a new bridge being built over the River Wandle, to help link the development with the surrounding area.

Cutting edge design, always at the forefront of every development by Copthorn Homes, is clearly evident in the overall appearance of the buildings with careful consideration given to the internal and external communal spaces, incorporating internal walkways and gantries between selected apartment blocks, which overlook the terraced gardens.

Abbey Mills is close to central London by car, tube or bus and yet it is one of the greenest boroughs in London with 10 recently established nature reserves. Shopping and recreational facilities are within walking distance and there are excellent transport links with both mainline and underground railway stations within walking distance and road links via the A3 to the M25, Heathrow and Gatwick airports and the national motorway network.

The marketing suite is now open daily from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm. Alternatively telephone for further information on 020 8543 6377 or take a virtual tour of the development by visiting our dedicated website at www.abbeymills.com
