From the outset, we have been determined to create an outstanding living environment, which prioritises people and the environment.
Adrian Putman, Development Director of GMV.
The team at Greenwich Millennium Village (GMV) were both delighted and surprised to receive two awards in a single week from the Sustainable New Homes Awards and the Evening Standard Awards! GMV is no stranger to awards, having received a whole range of accolades for architecture, design and even for its website.
The 2004 Sustainable New Homes Awards were developed by the House Builders Federation, in partnership with the WWF – the global environment network - to recognise new residential developments that have, at least, a minimal impact, and at best, a positive impact, on the environment.
At the first ever ceremony held at the Daily Mail head offices in Kensington, Greenwich Millennium Village was announced as the joint winners of the 2004 awards. The judges considered that GMV demonstrates the best of what is being achieved in both the public and private sectors and provides an excellent illustration of how to optimise a balance between environmental, social and economic factors.
The judges were impressed by the fact that homes at GMV reach high standards in terms of energy and water efficiency and the use of sustainable building materials, including timber from independently certified sources. GMV was the first development in the UK to receive an EcoHomes rating of 'Excellent' from the Building Research Establishment.
Residents also benefit from excellent transportation links and easy access to a range of local amenities and from the unique, recreational setting of the four-acre Ecology Park, which also offers a rich habitat for wildlife.
At the Evening Standard New Homes Awards 2004, held at the Savoy Hotel in London, GMV reaped another reward, receiving one of only four special commendations in the Best Development category. This award recognises the highest standards of development layout, landscaping, quality of construction and overall use of the site.
'From the outset, we have been determined to create an outstanding living environment, which prioritises people and the environment,' says Adrian Putman, Development Director of GMV. 'Together these two awards, one for design and quality and the other for sustainability, are a measure of our success to date.'
