Countryside Properties PLC, the developer of sustainable mixed-use and mixed-tenure projects, has been selected by AMEC Developments as their development partner for the residential element of the Sportcity site, in Manchester, which will be a unique mix of sport, leisure, retail and residential development. Sportcity, one of the UK's most extensive regeneration programmes, is situated next to the Commonwealth Games stadium in Beswick, New East Manchester.

Countryside Properties will, subject to planning permission, develop 360 canalside apartments and townhouses to appeal to a full range of purchasers. Construction works will start on site after next summer's Commonwealth Games, with the first occupiers taking up residence in mid-2003. The completed development value is estimated to be around £46 million.

The 6.77 acre site lies to the north and south of the Ashton Canal and the residential development will be linked by a new bridge. Countryside's scheme takes full advantage of all the benefits the site has to offer including the backdrop of the new Stadium, the canalside setting, views over nearby Phillips Park, as well as new public and private open space.

Richard Cherry, Group New Business Director, commented, "Sportcity represents another major step forward in Countryside's ongoing development programme in Manchester. Our aim is to harness our vision and skills in urban regeneration and in working with our partners, create a vibrant new urban quarter for Manchester."
