The Hoffmann Buildings, a development of Grade II listed Georgian and Victorian buildings which were formerly known as the City & Islington College of furniture design, are being converted into luxury loft-style apartments by Copthorn Homes, a member of the Countryside Group.
The developer, who has recently been voted 'Regional Housebuilder of the Year' in the 2000 Building Awards, has purchased the development in Pitfield Street, at the heart of London's trendy Hoxton. Work is now underway to restore the old buildings and transform them into 40 one, two and three bedroom apartments, which will be launched for sale on 8th July.
The main Georgian building dates from c.1825 and was converted by the City & Islington College into its department dedicated to furniture design. It has now been renamed 'The Hoffmann Buildings', after the eminent contemporary furniture designer.
Many original features such as high ceilings and exposed roof trusses have been retained in the main Georgian building and its Victorian extension. A portico entrance leads into an impressive open entrance hall with 7.5 m (24.7ft.) ceilings and some of the apartments will also benefit from 4 m (13.1 ft.) high ceilings.
Copthorn Homes has brought its trademark elements of innovative design to the interior of the buildings, which includes duplex style apartments, mezzanine floors and open-plan layouts to maximise space and natural light into the new homes. Each of the apartments are unique and benefit from a 'loft' feel through the creation of extra space, volume and height. In many of the apartments a mezzanine floor, covering over three quarters of the apartments' length, has been incorporated into the design, allowing purchasers to benefit from both the full height of the ceiling and a view over the mezzanine floor and balustrading above.
The Hoffmann Buildings are ideally located approximately a quarter of a mile from Old Street underground station (Northern Line) and three quarters of a mile from Liverpool Street Station (mainline services and Central, Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan Lines). The bars, sporting facilities and galleries in and around Hoxton Square are located nearby and Aske Gardens, which is adjacent to the development, offers open space with public access.
The first phase will be released for sale on 8th July priced from £249,950 for a two bedroom apartment.
