Tower Hamlets Local Labour in Construction (LLIC) hosted the annual construction challenge this week to coincide with National Construction Week.

The Construction Challenge is a two-day workshop, which gives young people aged 13-15 years, an insight into the construction industry. The two-day course involves a variety of practical and theoretical exercises and culminates with the teams of youngsters building their own flat pack house.

Jenny Newland, LLIC Apprentice Manager, said, "The Construction Challenge is geared towards raising awareness of the Construction Industry and demonstrates the many exciting opportunities that both young men and women can experience. Working with Countryside Properties has been invaluable in establishing links with the industry."

She added, "Challenges such as this are so very important in addressing the current skills shortages that the industry is experiencing. Countryside Properties is one developer that is forging ahead with new initiatives to help promote the construction industry. Their training programme has helped youngsters in developing the skills needed for a career in construction."

Paul Sweeney, Community Development Manager at Countryside Properties' In Partnership Division, said, "We have supported the Local Labour in Construction Initiative for 3 years and have found it an excellent way of offering children an exciting insight into the construction industry. By working with LLIC and the local schools and colleges we can ensure that the benefits and opportunities within Countryside and the construction industry as a whole are promoted".
