Bow Cross receives CABE Building for Life Standard 15 September 2010

Bow Cross in Tower Hamlets has received a CABE Building for Life Silver Standard.  At Bow Cross we are working with the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and Swan Housing Group to regenerate a neglected high-rise housing estate and create a vibrant mixed-tenure community.  This is the eleventh Building for Life Standard that the Group holds including a sector leading four Golds and now seven Silvers.

CABE said "Bow Cross successfully stitches a difficult site back into the neighbourhood and contributes positively to a neglected area."

On completion in 2014, three tower blocks will have been completely refurbished, semi-derelict podia garages and houses will be demolished, and more than 600 high quality mixed tenure homes will have been built. The Bow Cross development will also enjoy newly constructed transport links, landscaped public and private gardens with secure car parking.

Located in an exceptionally convenient location for transport links the Bow Cross development will attract a diverse mix of occupants and give the entire area a renewed sense of community.

The existing estate suffers from residents only being able to access the buildings via elevated walkways which are above very poorly maintained public open spaces with the estate dissected by a covered railway link.  Using contemporary design principles, including a 'Very Good' EcoHomes rating, and sympathetically tackling the problems of noise, day lighting, and visual continuance, the new Bow Cross development will be a long-term solution to the estate's regeneration.
