As the Deputy Prime Minister toured the facilities at the Centre, the project director of Greenwich Millennium Village Ltd, Ross Hammond, commented; "Greenwich Millennium Village will be a flagship residential development that brings to life an urban vision of Britain in the 21st century. Its emphasis is on a new style of enjoyable urban living, where the latest technological advances are used to make new homes more efficient and economical, and where the environment has been planned to make life more enjoyable."
The visitor centre is located at the entrance to the Greenwich Millennium Village site and is situated at the end of a long parkland vista running south east from the Dome. The centre includes an exhibition demonstrating the technological and environmental innovations which govern the construction of the village and provide an opportunity for potential purchasers to view and buy apartments.

Being built to a master plan by architect, Ralph Erskine, Greenwich Millennium Village provides a solution to the problems of creating new towns and villages; a real alternative to the sprawling new housing estates that lack the amenities that make for civilised living. By building to the highest standards, using best practice and the most advanced technology, Greenwich Millennium Village is establishing sustainable methods of construction and using innovative construction techniques for the future.
Greenwich Millennium Village will be designed to give residents as much flexibility as possible in terms of how they use the space in their home. Some homes will be equipped with moveable walls that can adapt to changing lifestyles. Two show apartments have been created within the visitor centre to provide an illustration of the property available.
The centre further includes a cybercafé, providing an opportunity for visitors to log on to the websites of the Greenwich Peninsula www.greenwichpeninsula.co.uk) and of the village itself, which will become on line in April.
The village is being developed by Greenwich Millennium Village Limited - a consortium comprising Countryside Properties plc and Taylor Woodrow Capital Developments Ltd - working closely with Moat Housing Group, Ujima Housing Association and English Partnerships. An ambitious mixed-use development, the village is expected to include almost 1,400 new homes, 20 percent of which will be affordable housing units or available for part purchase through shared ownership. They will be fully integrated into the overall development with their residents enjoying the same benefits as every other resident in the village.

The integration of different tenures, uses and lifestyles will create a series of sustainable new urban neighbourhoods, each planned around a landscaped and gated garden square for the use of its residents. This use of the garden squares as a focus, together with 24-hour security cover, enhances the safety and security of the village. Porterage will also be available to residents through a help line.
Also included will be new shops, restaurants and working spaces, together with community facilities such as a new school and health clinic. The new, two-form, primary school, designed by Edward Cullinan Architects, will have indoor and outdoor sports and other facilities. These will be available for use by the community outside school hours, with the school hall having a dual use for a variety of events and activities, and the all-weather sports pitch will be available for use by teams playing many different sports. The health centre, adjacent to the school, will operate with general practitioners in attendance.
The leisure needs of residents will be met with a public park, including a village green, designed to accommodate a wide range of leisure activities. There will also be an all-weather surface in a mounded arena next to the school. Greenwich Yacht Club has a new clubhouse and moorings at Pear Tree Wharf, close to the village centre. Work is now underway on a major new multiplex cinema in the round - the first of its kind in the world - which is being built by Parkridge Developments in a joint venture with UCI, Europe's leading cinema operator. This will have 14 screens and four restaurants.
