Three Countryside Properties employees have been nominated by Shelter, the charity that provides help and assistance to the homeless and the badly housed around Britain to run the New York Marathon.

Ian Crockford, Terry Tedder and Claire Walsh have been training for two months in preparation for running the 26.2 miles around the city of New York to raise money for the charity on November 6th 2005.  The team are all first time marathon runners.

‘Team Countryside’ will be trying to raise as much as possible for Shelter through their efforts in New York. The trip will be self-funded to ensure that all donations are passed directly onto the charity.

We have been extremely impressed with the amount of support offered so far.  We have been lucky enough to receive advice from seasoned marathon runners at every level and particularly appreciated the champagne fuelled training advice of our MD to run during our lunch hour with bricks on our backs!

Ian Crockford, Director of Major Projects at Countryside Properties

Bad housing robs people of security, health, and a fair chance in life.  Today, one million children in Britain are suffering in bad housing and need our support.

Shelter does a huge amount to help the homeless andbadly housed in Britain.  Homelessness among families has increased by 17% since 1997. Homeless children miss an average of a quarter of their schooling.  We are the fourth richest country in the world, and yet millions of people in Britain wake up every day in housing that is run-down, overcrowded or dangerous.

Adam Sampson, Director of Housing and Homelessness at Shelter recently stressed the current crisis situation: ‘Those who argue that we should reduce the level of housing growth need to recognise the scale of the current crisis in affordability and supply.’

Countryside Properties are fully committed to improving housing standards in Britain. Alan Cherry, Chairman, comments: ‘Cities, towns and neighbourhoods should be developed in a way that generates wealth for communities and investors alike, prioritises social equity, promotes cultural achievement and safeguards the natural environment.’

Donations to Shelter help provide people in Britain with help in the following ways:

  • £15 provides a ‘starting at school pack’ enabling children who have been homeless to settle into a new school without the stigma of not having what they need
  • £150 pays for drop in facilities for homeless families where children can play safely and parents can get support and advice
  • £1200 pays for a Shelter solicitor to take a complex case right through from initial crisis to an injunction hearing

The team has set up a website to enable people to sponsor them online. To do this please go to http://www.justgiving.com/teamcountryside.

ALL SPONSORSHIP RECEIVED WILL GO DIRECTLY TO SHELTER
