The bungalow has been declared our ideal home for the third year running, in a survey of 4,000 homebuyers by Alliance and Leicester. The single-storey home is still the choice design for many homebuyers in the UK, where 60% of the ageing population will be retired by 2010. Yet despite this vote, there are still not enough bungalows to meet their demand.
At a forthcoming development called 'Redleaf' in Fetcham, Surrey, which has the highest aged populate in the surrounding area, Countryside Properties is building four new bungalows in a cul-de-sac, which will be centred around a mature beech tree, along with just one, two-storey detached property. These bungalows will meet the needs of some of the growing number of older people, or 'empty-nesters' who want to downsize from a larger family house once their children have grown up and left home.
With the bungalows at Redleaf in Fetcham, Countryside Properties is addressing the growing gap in the market for older homeowners, who no longer need or want to maintain a large family house and yet do not want to move into sheltered housing.

Richard Rawson, Sales and Marketing Director for Countryside Properties' housebuilding division comments, "With the bungalows at Redleaf in Fetcham, Countryside Properties is addressing the growing gap in the market for older homeowners, who no longer need or want to maintain a large family house and yet do not want to move into sheltered housing. The large amount of interest we have had so far would indicate that we have been successful in targeting this group."
The five new homes are set in a peaceful location that overlooks farmland and offers attractive views of the surrounding countryside. This pocket of Surrey is a popular area, with access to extremely good schooling and all of the town amenities of Leatherhead nearby.
The bungalows have been cleverly designed so that should a purchaser require more space, an extra storey can easily be added at a later date, subject to planning. This is also a good investment opportunity, whereby the price of converting the home into a two-storey detached house would be considerably cheaper than buying such a property initially.
The two and three-bedroom bungalows, which each have an individual design, feature luxury fitted kitchens and bathrooms, fireplaces and one of the homes has a dining hall. Externally, some of the buildings have quoining details and each home has a private garden planted with Beech hedges, Holly and Apple trees to the rear and brick paved driveways at the front.
The two and three-bedroom bungalows are anticipated to be priced from £425,000 up to £585,000, with the larger two storey house in the region of £800,000. Countryside Properties is now taking enquiries for the homes, which will be ready for occupation in September. For sales enquiries telephone 01372 370 130 or email st@cpplc.com.
