For it was formerly a girls' school and she was a pupil there from 1933 until 1939. Now Philippa and her husband, Canon Cyril Bowkett, are buying one of the apartments and their dining room will be the former school sickbay where she spent three weeks while suffering from an ear infection back in 1933.

"Another former pupil and I just could not resist going back to look at our old school and after we were shown around the apartments I jokingly said they could put me down for one in five years time," she said.

"But after my husband had also been to look at Eastern House he said why wait five years when we could have a brand new one now." said Philippa who is Vice Chairman of Brean Parish Council.

"Our large house in Brean has an acre of garden and it's all getting a bit too much for us so now we shall be moving into a really beautiful apartment with wonderful views," she said.

Canon Bowkett, who was Rector of the Church of St George the Martyr in Southwark for 35 years and Honorary Canon of Southwark Cathedral, often takes services at St John's Church in Weston so the move to Eastern House will be very convenient.

Countryside Regional Sales Manager Marilyn Burden said she was delighted to welcome Canon and Mrs Bowkett to Eastern House which was ideal for older people requiring more manageable homes.

"These apartments are simply made for those looking to move from larger, possibly period properties, into more modern convenient homes whilst retaining a high quality of living in spacious surroundings," she said.

"They are also highly suitable for younger professional people looking for an apartment lifestyle," said Mrs Burden.

The 13 two-bedroom apartments and one one-bedroom home combine the latest in luxurious modern living with an air of grandeur and tranquillity and enjoy extensive landscaped grounds and wonderful views across Weston Bay.

The Belvedere Place mansion, which is now being restored to its former glory, was originally built around 1872 as a young gentlemens' school by E.G. Comfort and became Eastern House Hospital in the 1940s

The Show Apartment is now open daily from 11am until 5pm and prices are from œ105,000 to œ175,000. Part exchange is available.
