As part of enhancing the Wandle area for the local community and visitors, Countryside Properties Plc has provided a new bridge across the River Wandle at Merton Abbey Mills, for pedestrians and cyclists.
The new footbridge will improve access to Wandle Way for the local community and visitors, as well as reducing foot and cycle journey times to the tramlink. It will be officially opened on Sunday 13th June 2004 by the new Mayor of Merton Cllr. Margaret Brierly and the Mayor of Sutton, Cllr. Tony Brett Young, during the Wandle Valley Festival.
The Wandle Valley Festival will take place along the River Wandle from Croydon to Wandsworth, with the main events held at Merton Abbey Mills, the central point of the river, on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th June 2004.
The Wandle Valley Festival will provide two days of enjoyment for people of all ages, especially families. Activities will include: organised walks along the Wandle Trail guided by experts from the Ramblers Association; cycle rides along the Wandle Trail with leaders from local groups of the London Cycling Campaign, joining in with the start of National Bike Week. There will also be an opportunity to discover the Wandle's rich historical heritage by visiting special displays throughout the Wandle Valley, including the Chapter House at Merton Abbey Mills. This is a precious remnant of medieval Merton Priory, with displays and finds from excavations and archaeologists on hand to answer questions. At Merton Abbey Mills there will be a brass band, activities within the market itself, Shire Horses from Young's Brewery will also be giving rides on the day and the opening of the new bridge.
Countryside Properties is committed to preserving and improving the area as part of their Abbey Mills development on the banks of the River Wandle. The development will comprise one, two and three bedroom contemporary apartments, two new restaurants, a Premier Lodge Hotel, a Virgin Active Health and Fitness Centre with a 25m swimming pool. This scheme will provide employment opportunities for local people and will improve the local environment by creating over 250 new jobs, as well as widespread environmental and landscape improvements.
Just 30 minutes away from Central London, Abbey Mills is perfect for the commuter, with excellent transport links to 14 railway stations via the Northern & District Underground lines and trams to Wimbledon, Croydon and Beckenham. There are also good road links via the A3 to the M25, Heathrow and Gatwick airports and the national motorway network.
