The Gravesend Canal Basin provides a unique opportunity to create a new and vibrant focal point for the town
Richard Cherry, Group New Business Director of Countryside Properties
Countryside Properties PLC, the developer of sustainable mixed-use and mixed-tenure communities, has signed a development agreement with Gravesham Borough Council for the regeneration of the Gravesend Canal Basin. This follows the recent submission by Countryside Properties of an outline planning application for a major mixed-use development which will form part of the fast-growing Kent Thameside region.
Up to 1,000 apartments and town houses, a 37,660 sq. ft. (3,500 sq.m.) neighbourhood centre including cafés and restaurants and approximately 21,520 sq.ft. (2,000 sq.m.) of light industrial accommodation, are expected to be created in the proposed scheme. The proposals also include the refurbishment of the Canal Basin itself for leisure and tourism uses and major transport and infrastructure improvements.
Work is expected to commence in early 2004 with completion expected in 2011. Completed development value is expected to be approximately £60 million.
Also within the Kent Thameside region, Countryside Properties, in a joint venture with Land Securities, is currently developing 500 new homes at 'Waterstone Park' adjacent to Bluewater shopping and leisure centre.
Richard Cherry, Group New Business Director of Countryside Properties, commented: "The Gravesend Canal Basin provides a unique opportunity to create a new and vibrant focal point for the town, as well as attracting significant investment into the area. The scheme continues Countryside Properties' already strong involvement in the Kent Thameside region and is a further example of our ability to develop major mixed-use schemes."
Jonathan Clay, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Gravesham Borough Council, said: "We welcome the completion of the development agreement with Countryside Properties as it represents a major step forward in achieving the Council's long held ambition of realising a comprehensive regeneration of the Canal Basin. We believe this scheme can also become the catalyst for further regeneration of the riverfront area."
