In total we saved £2.8 million through sustainability and related supply chain improvements and a further £2.4million in 2008.
In 2009 84% (2008: 79%) of our residential output was on brownfield and recycled urban land, well above the Government’s target of 60% by 2008 which we have surpassed every year since 2001. We are provisionally claiming £456,000 tax relief for the remediation of contaminated land during the financial year (2007/8 £1.3 million). This pronounced drop is due to the impact of the recession on the number of active sites.

We continue to instil sustainability awareness to our employees and sub-contractors via communication through a variety of means, including Committees and Forums, our intranet based Environmental Management System, training (with both internal audiences and external stakeholders), trade specifications and contracts, principal contractor and sub-contractor checklists and Reporting.

The Group fully endorses the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS). We are committed to all staff and sub-contractors visiting or working on the Group’s sites being in possession of a CSCS/affiliated card or providing evidence of being registered with the appropriate skills and organisations to obtain one.
To date 96% (2008 – 91%) of the Group’s employees that require a CSCS card have obtained them. The remaining 4% are new and existing employees in various stages of obtaining their CSCS Cards.
