This £2.5 billion project aims to transform the area physically, socially and economically creating a sustainable and cohesive community. Over the next 15 years more than 12,000 new and refurbished homes will be provided across all tenures, as well as creating vibrant town centres, more green spaces and many more choices and opportunities for both new and existing residents.
We are undertaking the first phase of this important regeneration project for the London Borough of Newham. It will provide 600 new mixed-tenure homes, together with new school buildings and a playground for Keir Hardie Primary School, community facilities and high quality open space.
A range of tenures will be integrated throughout the development. The dwellings will consist of apartments, maisonettes and houses, with a strong emphasis on family homes. The affordable new homes will be managed by William Sutton Housing Association.
The partners are committed to achieving a positive and lasting transformation of the physical and social environment of Canning Town and Custom House, and improve the quality of life for both existing and future residents.
Establishing links with and supporting and involving the local communities in which we work has always been a fundamental part of our approach to estate regeneration. We recently sponsored a special art project for Keir Hardie Primary School. Children aged between 5 and 11 from the school's Gifted and Talented group produced a 2ft by 2ft mosaic plaque that will take pride of place in their new school.
Once all the demolition is complete, work on the first new homes is due to begin in late 2008.
